Let’s discuss opinions on the proper or better yet preferred roost pole Height for our fowl.
What I would like to hear, is let pretend we are building a new yard, with fresh “Ideal” pens
What would be your IDEAL pen size and roost height for your birds?
My pens are large most are 6+6+12 ft and my roost poles are 4ft high. I make them out of rebar pvc pipe and concrete into ground. I never have indented breast bones and the soles of there feet stay in good shape, no problem with bumble foot
I personally breed Reza sized birds . If I were to re build the whole yard I would go with all 4x6x6 and 4x8x6
With rooster poles any near the 4 feet mark,I tend to keep pine shavings as substrate for my pens And between the 4 ft roost and plenty of litter to scratch they come out of these pens with great bodies and physical fitness
I like to select fresh cut logs for roosts as some bark covered wood has protection aginst mites etc, I awlays have them aprox 3" to 6" dia, about 2feet off the floor for heavy birds and select a log with a small dip in the centre when in position. This helps the birds to hop up and balance when more than a couple are using it.
Ideally I like a 4’ w x6’ h x6’ deep pen for my birds between 4-6 lbs I keep about 3-4 inches of pine shavings in these type of cages and like the roost to be between 3-4 ft high
Between a 4 ft roost and the 3-4 inches of litter birds come out of these pens in phenomenal shape
These are birds that naturally roost high and I think a lot of times we look for convenience and resort to small pens , often over looking the importance of allowing adequate space for a bit of natural conditioning,
I also like a fresh cut branch or limb for my roost poles as well plenty of woods around the house so plenty of roost pole material haha
