Friend Soukie, would need to know if he has any more symptoms, how long has he had the rattle, has he had it before. any swelling of eyes or head, watey eyes, runny nose, any bad breath odor. look down his throat to look for an obstruction. does it get worse at certain times then others.
usually CRD which is a secondary stage of Coryza will show the other symptoms runny stinky nose, watery eyes, and swelling in the head, but not always, for 5-6 pound bird, I have given 1/2cc of Tylan 50, inject under the skin is prefered, or into his Breast, some people remove the needle and shoot it down the throat but it isn't as affective orally. 8-10 pound Bird give 1/2cc in breast and 1/2 cc under skin for 5 days, use Vet RX 3 drops down the mouth and drop or two to the head, Vicks will help also, if you can get Sulfathiazole powder use 1/2 teaspoon per gal of water for 2 weeks. you can get the Coryza vaccine 1/2 cc anywhere under the skin then again in three weeks. I used to go thru the treatments, any more when a bird shows the signs, I will cull. Its a hard battle to win. Coryza and Crd are a world wide problem, and birds become carriers, it becomes a reacurring cycle at some point. With my Flock any time a bird shows any kind of sickness or weakness I cull. A weak or sick bird usually has a weak system. I wish you good luck with it
I too have never vaccinated my gamefowls and I have always believed in my gamefowls ruggedness to survive. My gamefowls are exposed to all weather conditions. I have a question for fowlgame how does Coryza and CRD spread? Through contact? I have not introduced any new gamefowls on my property in years so I would like to know if the above two disease can be contacted during a show.
Friend Indian Rajah, back when I was a kid it was called the Roup, today it called in the first stages Cortza, developing into CRD= Chronic Respiratory Disease, Chronic meaning Long Lasting, Professional Scienctist call it Mycoplasma Gallisepticum or MG. Its known as PPLO in cattle. It is carried-spread by wild birds, it is Air Born, spread by the soles on your shoes if you walk on contaminated soil then go home. IT spreads very easily. Likes abreu said it is brought on by stress, has also be called the shipping disease, Racing Pigeons offen suffer from CRD brought on after an exhausting flight. If you birds become infested with worms that stress to can bring on CRD. When a commerical farm is found to have CRD they are made to Depopulate all birds. The Bottom line is, it is nothing to be messing with. I just try to start by birds off Healthy as Chicks and hope, along with I Worm at 1 month, then 10 days later I worm again. At 6 weeks I run Corrid 20% soluble powder thru them for 4 days to prevent Coccidiosis. 1 month later I run Corrid thru them again for 3 days. And again at 6 months. I very rarely have a sick or droopy bird. Their are 9 types of coccidiosis, and it destories the intestines. I just trying to build a strong immune system in them. And yes it can be spread at shows of any kind, if there is a infected bird there.
A few years ago I did some work at a new Veterinary Hospital in Lake Wales for several weeks, had several talks with the doctors about Crd, They likened it to Cancer in people. Every person on earth is born with Cancer in their body. The Cancer Cells all constantly mutating and mulitiplying, it acts as a vaccine for or in us. Anyway we all have Cancer from Birth, the people who suffer from it have been or are stressed by bad habit, over exposure to what ever. Bottom line it's about our immune systems, if we don't smoke, drink to much, expose our selves to too much stress on our bodies, a good strong immune system keeps the Cancer in Check. I see CRD as much the same way
