THE ORIGIN OF THE ASIL BREED(S)
On the Asil Club forum we had an interesting debat about this. The first question is what are the homelands of the Asil ? Domestic Asils are found in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Iran and Central Asia (Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan). Domestic Asil are also found in Western China. Of course our Indian friends were a bit fired up when I suggested that geographically seen India is not necesarry the source of the Asil breed as the breed is found in a much larger geograpical area. And this fact gives of course food for thoughts on this subject. A few years ago in England a large project was started about poultry genetics including origin and relationship. Therfor I asked friends from various Asil homelands to send feathers (these carry DNA) to that organisation performing this project. Samples were send from small (Reza-type) Asil, large (Kulang-type) Asil (incl bearded varieties), Bihangam, Malay-type Asils (plus European Malays to find out their relationship). If I recall correctly the countries included were India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Sri Lanka, England and Holland (Malays from SA). As this is a massive project it will take a few years to analyse the DNA and the interpetation of the research data. The last news about the project I received from my contact was this (citation)......We’re still plugging away on a bunch of screening and will get to deeper sequencing in the next few months. Thanks for your patience. DNA mapping will give us eventually the scientific answers about origins and relationships between the various Asil varieties and related breeds.
PS A similar project was carried out in Japan about the Shamo. They concluded that there were genetically seen two groups. The oldest group was found on Okinawa island. DNA simply does not lie !
