Hello Doc, there is no evidence that Christians or Jews were involved or contributed to the sport of cockfighting in India (including present day Pakistan and Bangladesh). As said cockfighting was a tradition practiced in India (Pakistan & Bangladesh) for pleasure and religious rituals. It was not necessary the sport of the Indian royals. Was it the favorite sport of the Nawabs (Muslim rulers) in India ? We cant say as the information in Western gamefowl literature only reports about cockfighting at Islamic Nawab (local Muslim rulers) courts. Favorite pastimes of Indian Muslim Nawabs were: hunting, falconery and a very big sport was pigeon flying. There is no proof that cockfighting was a common pastime at the courts of Muslim Nawabs. I doubt that the Muslims took it to a higher level. Here an interesting example from an Indian friend, Mr.Mullapudi Narendranath from Hyderabad, the capital of the Andhra Pradesh state in the south of India. He told me that in the old days it was a custom for Indian Maharajas (from the south) to hand out Asil to their local farmers to raise, test and train them. At the Sankranti festival all these birds were presented for fighting in front of the Maharaja. The very best were taken by the Maharaja to breed from these birds ! Doc, the biggest problem is the absence of documents from Muslim and Hindu sources. What exists are actually only "fragments" collected by less then a handful (Western) sources ! Just my view.
